Live Bluegrass Music
by East Tennessee University Alumni Band!
J.P. Mathes was born in Elizabethton, TN and began playing banjo while he was in middle school. While attending high school he was allowed to join the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass Program. He continued on with ETSU receiving both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. As a student he performed all over the United States and the world spreading bluegrass music. Performance highlights include; the Smithsonian Folk Festival, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, NATO Headquarters in Brussels Belgium, and seven tours of Japan. J.P. Mathes was also the graduate assistant for the ETSU Bluegrass program handling scheduling ensembles and teaching banjo. In 2006-2007 he was named adjunct instructor at ETSU and taught ensemble, banjo, group guitar, and bluegrass seminar. He is currently performing with the International Bluegrass Group called the Last Frontier which tours both in the United States and Japan and is also currently an instructor at the Kentucky School of Bluegrass and Traditional Music in Hazard KY.
With a background of playing Bluegrass and Gospel music in Churches and Nursing homes, Adam Starr has been emerged in roots music from an early age. Originally attending a university in South GA on a track scholarship, Adam found out about the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass and Old Time country music program at East Tennessee State as a sophomore and decided to apply for their public performance scholarship. Receiving this Scholarship Adam immediately transferred to ETSU and after one semester he made the top performing band, the “ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band.” While a member of the Pride Band Adam traveled across the East Coast performing at an assortment of venues and festivals and alongside many of his heroes including Grand Ole Opry members such as Ralph Stanley, Rhonda Vincent, and even once with the legendary Earl Scruggs! After graduating from ETSU, Adam has moved back to his home in south GA where he is currently employed in our state’s horticulture industry.
This is a rare reunion for Adam and some of his friends and former band members of the world renowned ETSU Bluegrass Program!

Here's what others have said about our annual open house:
I happened upon your awesome opening weekend celebration by chance last year and LOVED it! The prices were great, food, festivities and energy awesome and I would love to plan for it this year and find a caravan of people to bring with me. Unfortunately we can't carpool because I will need every last cubic inch of space for plants! What day and time should I mark on my calendar?
Thanks!
Paula C.
Thank You, Paula! We're glad you had a great time.
